Communicating Effectively

According to PMI, 50% of all project funds are put at risk due to poor or substandard communication. We explore why good communication skills are crucial to all leaders. The workshop uses real world examples to illustrate how easily communication can go awry.  Practical recommendations to improve communication skills are shared.

Leading People; Managing Tasks

A recent Gallup survey found more than 75% of the people surveyed left their last position because of their immediate supervisor; statistics like this mean that developing leadership skills for all staff is a business imperative.

Building Great Teams

Every team needs a leader, and the leaders doesn’t have to have an official title. It is important to understand that having a title doesn’t make you a leader. Learn the five traits of a great team and practical strategies for building trust and influencing others.

Planning for Success

As Ben Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” The key to effective field leadership is understanding the strategy or goal you are responsible for executing and planning the tactics to make it happen. Each contractor, subcontractor and supplier is tied to the larger project goal and recognizing this will help facilitate a smoother project.

Building Alliances to Build Your Career

Great performance is the foundation of your career, building strategic professional alliances can take you to the next level. It is not only what you know, it is who knows what you know and where you want to go in your career. Mentors are important, sponsors are critical, knowing the difference can make the difference. This workshop can be tailored specifically for women, if desired.

The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team

Workshop based on the principles of Patrick Lencioni’s book of the same name. COLLC is an approved facilitator for these workshops one which is intended for intact teams and one designed for team leaders. Teamwork is the ultimate competitive advantage, because it is both powerful and rare. A high functioning team can achieve its potential thus creating a more effective organization. In the team workshop, team members will reach a common understanding of what it means to be a team and make progress becoming a more cohesive team. In the team leader workshop, participants will improve the cohesion and function of their teams by applying the Five Dysfunctions model.

Speaking Engagements
Constructing Opportunity is available for speaking engagements. Our Principals have spoken at events for NAWIC Regional Forums and Annual Conferences, Chicagoland AGC, CFMA and others. Sample topics are listed below, complete list of topics and references are available upon request.

Gender Diversity is Good Business

Studies have shown that businesses with 20% or more of their leadership roles held by women outperform financially. In order to get women into leadership roles, construction must first attract and retain women and then ensure they are in the pipeline. This is a challenge across the workplace but particularly in male dominated industries. We discuss the unconscious bias women face and how this holds them back. We explore practical strategies to mitigate these biases both on the individual and organizational level.

Company Culture Drives Performance

Company Culture drives employee satisfaction. In a recent Hays Recruiting report, 34% of construction professionals said culture was the reason they left their job and 47% of job seekers said it is the reason they are leaving their current job. Learn the role company culture plays in recruiting and retaining talent for the construction industry. Strategies and tips will be shared on how to strengthen your culture to maximize productivity and protect the bottom line.
